Grand Turk Island

Grand Turk is the historical and political centre of the Turks and Caicos, and the second most populated island in the country after Providenciales. Originally founded by settlers from Bermuda as a site for sea salt production in 1681, Cockburn Town on Grand Turk has been the official capital of the country since 1766. Many of the country’s main government offices, such as the Supreme Court and Governor’s Residence can be found here.

Several important historic events have taken place around this small island, including being the likely spot of Columbus’s first landfall in the New World, and the first land American astronaut John Glenn stepped foot on after orbiting Earth in 1962.

All scheduled international flights into the Turks and Caicos arrive at Providenciales International Airport (PLS). You’ll need to take a domestic flight from Providenciales to get to Grand Turk. Two local airlines offer regular flights. Normal flight time from Providenciales to Grand Turk is about 30 minutes and return fares usually cost between $110 and $160.

Grand Turk is a relatively small island, and at only six and a half miles long, transportation is less difficult than on Providenciales. Rental vehicles and taxis are the main means of transportation. There is no public transport or bus service. The island is laid-back and driving is largely free of traffic and stress. Most roads are paved, and the majority of those that are not can in most cases still be traversed (albeit a little slower) in any vehicle. The island-wide speed limit is 20MPH, but drivers can be expected to exceed 40MPH on the straightaways. We provide late Model Toyota Cars at no additional cost for each Villa.

December to April is typically the high-season. During this period, the rates for accommodations and activities are often at least 30% to 50% percent higher compared to the rest of the year, and availability may be limited as well. The low season occurs during the late summer and early autumn months, which coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season. Due to the relatively limited number of visitors at this time, some businesses either temporarily close down or take the opportunity to renovate.  If you are able to reschedule your vacation in the unlikely chance that a hurricane threatens the Turks and Caicos, booking during the low season can result in substantial savings.
